Norstar Call Recording FAQ

  1. How do I know whether my telephone system is Norstar/BCM?
  2. What current or past digital telephone models are associated with the Norstar/BCM system?
  3. Why is it important to choose a call recording system that has been designed with a focus on Norstar/BCM compatibility?

How do I know whether my telephone system is Norstar/BCM?

One way is to pick up a typical telephone on your system and look for a model number on the back to see if it is associated with the Norstar/BCM system. If there is no label or model number listed, you can use Algo's visual Nortel Telephone Model Identifier Chart to match your telephone with the proper system. Alternatively, you can go to your building's Telephone Equipment Room and look for the Norstar or BCM name on the telephone server unit.

Why is it important to choose a call recording system that has been designed with a focus on Norstar/BCM compatibility?

There are often significant differences in how data is handled depending on the type of telephone platform. A system that has been designed for optimal performance on a particular platform can usually offer better performance on that system. As an example, a generic call recorder system might be able to recover voice information from a call, but miss the data associated with that call (such as Set Display information). Or the generic system may not be able to take advantage of such features as telephone-triggered record-on-demand functionality or other features that use data signals that are proprietary to the particular phone system.
